Welcome to my Chem-E Folio!
My name is Ashley Nicole Johnston and I'm a Junior Chemical Engineering student at Texas A&M University. I am currently preparing to do Spring/Summer COOP with Nalco in 2014. I am highly interested in this area because of it's involvement in the chemical industry. When I graduate I plan to work in either the Chemical or Oil & Gas Industry. Within these industries, I hope to receive the opportunity to travel internationally
The purpose of this Chem-E-Folio is to provide an overview of who I am, what I've done, and what I've learned from my past experiences. What I hope you'll find after exploring this site is that I have an abundance of experiences that have prepared me to collaborate, communicate, and embrace culture in a way that will make me an asset in any situation I encounter.

Communicate EffectivelyCommunication can either make you, or break you. When in the workplace, communication is the key attribute to being successful. Poor communication can lead to incorrect inferring, bad feelings, or just plain inefficiency. As a student, I am constantly communicating with students, professors, and teammates. All three are very different contexts and require an understanding of what the receiver of information needs to know. I have used communication in a variety of instances. As a camp counselor, I was truly tested in effective communication when I was asked to lead a 2-day seminar for students. I was also required to work with the other counselors to resolve conflicts and plan outings. These experiences with communication have given me the chance to become a better engineer.

Work CollaborativelyWorking in teams can bring many things to the table. Having multiple minds in one group can bring good things like new ideas, viewpoints, and methods. Unfortunately, being in a group can also provide for conflicts and lack of communication. I have been in situations where I've had to work around the bad things and emphasize the good. As a camp counselor I was required to work with other counselors to plan out daily activities and plan a seminar. I have also worked on many project teams that have required me to either take leadership or work with other teammates under a leader. Through one project in particular, I had to find a way to overcome conflicting schedules and implement a collaborative online technology that allowed simultaneous editing while in different places. These experiences with collaboration have given me knowledge and understanding that have truly led me to be a successful engineer.

Demonstrate Social, Global, and Cultural CompetenceI have found that both understanding different cultures and serving the community contribute to the betterment of humankind. Through both church and school I have had opportunities to serve the community around me. I have even seen and embraced different cultures while in Belize and Italy. While in Belize I was able to converse in a language that I had only learned from textbooks. Experiencing such adventures and instances raised my awareness of those around me. This attribute leads to a respectful and caring approach when dealing with others. Engineers are constantly required to deal with people from different places and cultures, so I know that this attribute will make me a great engineer.
