Volunteering!
Volunteering creates an opportunity to give back to the community that you appreciate. I always make an effort to show those around me how grateful I am for their support as well my drive to support them. The following are several of the service events and organizations that I have been involved with.
Katy Christian Ministries
Katy Christian Ministries in Katy, TX is an organization that accepts monetary and tangible donations, and then uses them to make a difference in the live's of others through God's Grace and the goodwill of the community. I was able to volunteer sporadically while in high school and logged over 100 hours. As a volunteer I worked in the KCM resale shop. My duties were to organize incoming donations and reorganize shelves within the store. Because I worked so frequently at the store, I was able to slowly implement better organization systems such as making sub categories of usable and unusable when separating donations.
Twin City Missions
Twin City Missions in Bryan, TX is an organization that works to make the Brazos Valley a better place. Twin City Missions has donation centers, rehabilitation centers, and soup kitchens that provide for those who are in need. As a volunteer, I worked in the soup kitchen and served food to the people who live in the rehabilitation center. I had invaluable conversations with residents about the hardships they've been through.
Big Event
The Big Event is a student led organization at Texas A&M University that gathers students for one BIG day to go out and serve the community. For the past two years I have been an attendee of the Big Event. I spent my first day helping out an elderly couple in Bryan. My group and I repaired and repainted a shed, landscaped the yard, and painted the front porch. My second day was spent helping a single woman in College Station. We re-mulched the yard, painted the porch, and repaired the back fence. I take pride in the Big Event because of the eagerness the students at Texas A&M show to give back to the community that is constantly supporting us.
Vacation Bible School
I served as a staff helper for four years at Vacation Bible School with Second Baptist Church in Houston, TX. My responsibilities were to lead the children (ages 5-10) through a day of crafts, music, and learning. Each day I helped to decorate the rooms in different themes to fit each day's lesson. It was a great experience to care for these children and share my faith with them.
The above volunteer opportunities have given me a greater understanding of the many needs the people around us have. It is always a joy to be able to share and hear about experiences because of the learning that comes of it. Volunteering is essential to the betterment of humankind and life-long learning.
